SFAI Sketchers U16s National Cup Last 16 Match Shannon Town (CLare) v Bearna Na Forchna (Galway) Lynch Park, Shannon 08.03.20 (2PM KO)
Match Report 1st half
This match kicked off at a fierce and face pace with both teams coming out ready and all prepared for this last 16 All Ireland cup tie. Shannon Town gained possession and passed the ball well and were rewarding for this inside the 2nd minute when a crossfield pass from Craig Riordan sent wide left to Jamie Doyle who linked with Charlie Morrison who then made a great dribble inside to the edge of the box and then accurately converted his shot into the bottom right-hand corner. A super start from the Shannon Town boys!! Charlie was keeping the Bearna defenders on their toes early on with his speed threatening and clever dribbling. Within minutes, too many soft free kicks from Shannon Town paid the price when Bearna got a free kick in a dangerous position. Their striker hit the ball well over the wall to the left with Shannon Town goalkeeper getting a hand to stop it, but hit with great power and couldn’t be stopped. 1-1 with 5mins played. The game continued. It was a physical contest with both teams showing great passion creating chances at both ends. Bearna had a good move down the right from midfield and finished with a cross into near the Shannon goalie missed. Jamie Doyle was a treat down the left wing producing some fine crosses on many an occasion and combination play with Alex Meaney & Gavin Connolly. On the right for Shannon Town were Gavin Carrig and Oggie Harrington attacking. Gavin was attacking and defending well as was Gavin Connoly with two centre backs Craig Riordan and Colin Curran completing the back four of defenders. It was a free kick on 30mins to Shannon Town struck by Craig Riordans just outside the box was hit hard and low and on target was saved by a good Bearna goalkeeper but was unable to hold the shot. A clever Colin Riordan was quickest to react and pounch to smash it into the net at the back post to put Shannon Town 2-1 ahead. From here Bearna didn’t threaten the Shannon goal much having only one striker isolated away from midfield. For the remainder of the half Shannon Town defended well and tried to keep possession when having the ball with their passing style from back to front moving it quick in 1/2 touch combination passing with good play from Cian Johnson and Alex meaney controlling the match in midfield as two number 6s keeping the ball well with full backs and rotation with Colin Riordan allowing forward runs from midfield. Also, Colin Currans produced some fine interceptions in defense and won plenty of 1v1 battles offering excellent cover in defense.
The second half started like the first at a very face pace with both teams challenging for every ball. The rain started and made conditions worse for a good 5-10 minutes and after allowed the game to flow again like the first half with both attacking and defending in phases. Shannon town got their well deserved third with about 15mins remaining from a cross into the box was saved and next ball fell to the head of Charlie Morrison who bounced it over the goalie and into the goal that followed with great celebrations. Shannon Town nearly got a fourth 5mins later when a ball came to Kevin Kelly whose shot just lifted over the bar in an open goal was very unlucky. Liam Cooke was confident in goal with good catching in 2nd half and started attacks well for the back, The game finished strong with some hard but fair tackles coming from both teams each with some exchanges in between. Generally both teams played the match with heart and was a tough exchange between the two with Shannon Town finishing as 3-1 winners and now go to the last 8 quarter-finals an away day against Kiltimagh in Mayo next Saturday with a home draw the prize with another win for semi-finals in Shannon, April.
