Clare's Kennedy Cup team are at home to the West Waterford East Cork Schoolboys/girls League this Sunday 24th in Tulla at 2pm. This will bring the group to a close. They go into this match knowing that a win should give them at least second place in the group. Best of luck to Davy Wall and his charges in this match.
Clare's first game was against West cork in Mid September which they won three nil (see here for report).
Our second match was against table toppers Cork SL in Carrigaline on Sunday 3rd of October. Report below:
CORK vs CLARE 2-0
Clare Kennedy Cup squad played their 2nd game of the Kennedy cup 2021 campaign in Carrigaline last Sunday to face a strong Cork side coming from an impressive result vs WWEC. The game started a little scrappily, but it was Clare who had the first two big chances in the 3rd and 4th minute with Jack Daly and Tiernan Adelu. In the 6th minute Cork found the goal when a missed shot at the edge of the Clare penalty area turned into a perfect assist for Cork’s striker who beat Conor Wall with a precise finish near the post.
In the 10th minute Clare found some conviction and Tiernan Adelu intercepted a back pass from the Cork full back to his GK, but his shot was saved. On the 12th minute Conor Wall’s long-range pass found Tiernan Adelu into the Cork penalty area but the shot went just over the crossbar. On the 19th minute Clare Oliver Hawes’s shot was blocked and on the consequent corner Clare couldn’t find the space for a shot as Cork defenders were very compact in stopping every Clare’s attempt. Clare midfielders Kyle Kirby and Callum Casey lead by Captain Matt Jones at this stage of the game were working tirelessly to stop every Cork attempt to pass the midfield line helped by the 2 full backs Daniel Brody and Liam Heffernan.
In the 22nd minute Cork had a free kick just outside the Clare penalty area, but the shot was comfortably saved by Conor Wall and on the counterattack Clare had another great chance with Tiernan Adelu on a long cross of Aiden Moloney. In the 29th minute Daniel Brody earned a free kick outside the Cork penalty area which was delivered well again by Aidan Moloney but the shot from Callum Casey was blocked by the Cork full back just inside the area. On the 32nd minute a long clearance from the Cork defence turned into a very good chance for Cork number 10 who passed the Clare GK Conor Wall but his shot was cleared by Liam Heffernan on the goal line. In the injury time of the 1st half Clare number 9 Tiernan Adelu had another shot but it went just off target.
The 2nd half saw Clare change a few players in the attempt to get some fresh energy with the introduction of Etnik Aliu, Adam Kilker and Ryan McCarthy.
In the 2nd minute it was Cork that after a great combination at the edge of the Clare box found the shot saved by Clare GK Conor Wall. In the 5th minute another quick combination, Cork midfielder shot from the edge of the penalty area goes over the crossbar. In the 13th minute a Cork midfielder tried from distance, but his shot was well wide. On the 16th minute a long through from near the corner flag from a Cork player reaches his teammate who was right in front of goal but missed by shooting over the crossbar again. In the 18th minute Clare replied with Adam Kilker’s long range effort saved on the ground from the Cork Goalkeeper. On the 21st minute another very long through from a Cork player caught the Clare defence out of guard and failed to clear right at the edge of the 6 yds box; the quickest to react was Cork’s striker who capitalized scoring the second goal for the home team. In the 24th minute Clare GK Conor Wall made a top class save on a shot from the Cork striker again who controlled and hit the ball directly from a corner kick. On the 25th minute Clare forward Jack Daly was brought down at the edge of the Cork area, but the referee didn’t see anything wrong with the challenge and allowed to play on. One minute afterwards Matt Jones with a precise pass managed to find his teammate Darragh Baker who put a great cross in the box, but Etnik Aliu was anticipated by the Cork GK. On the 30th minute Clare GK Kyle Mcinerney had to come out of his penalty area to stop a Cork player and clear the danger. The last chance of the match went to Jack Daly for Clare following another long-range free kick from Aiden Moloney, but his shot finished just wide.
Overall a great effort from all the Clare boys who played a very physical and strong opponent and ended up just a bit unlucky not to find the goal on the day.
